Dario Gradi under the radar?

Think he was in all areas.

Re: Best managers in English football
Ron Saunders is a good call

Dario Gradi in the lower league's is someone that went under the radar but is highly regarded by many top players and fellow managers alike.

The one who stands out like a sore thumb in that list is Mancini. May as well say Pellegrini.

I would have every other manager mentioned on this thread above Mancini, except Hughes.

Totally agree. Not to have Bobby Robson and Ron Greenwood on that list is odd too.

Re: Best managers in English football
You would probably have to do a separate pre and post Premier league list for this because the money, standard of pitches, player’s personalities and size of the squads involved are so different.

A bit like comparing Pele with Messi etc.

Over a long haul Ranieri certainly isn’t anywhere near the best managers in English football. He’s failed at nearly every club he’s managed. Over a period of one season though he managed Leicester to the greatest achievement in English football history Imo.

As far as other managers I haven’t seen mentioned, what about Graham Taylor?

Yeah he was mocked as England manager but in a 6 year period he took Watford from the 4th Division to the 1st Division, FA Cup Final and Runners up to Liverpool in the league.

Ron Saunders at Aston Villa. In 7 years he got them promotion, won 2 league cups, then the 1st division championship and took them to the Quarterfinals of the European cup (which they went on to win) before quitting.

Howard Kendall at Everton between 1984-1987. Won the FA Cup in 1984, League & European Cup winners Cup in 1985 and League again in 1987.
Also got to 3 other major finals in 1984, 1985 & 1986.

Don't see any of the recent Brighton Managers listed, what they have achieved over recent years with limited resources has been truly outstanding.

No mention of Big Sam?

Most on those lists have inherited teams that are already set up to fight for silverware.

BFS doesn’t win stuff and doesn’t serve up attractive football - but as a manager he has an outstanding record of getting the best out of mediocre squads.

How far back do you want to go? You could add Ramsey, Nicholson, Revie, Mercer from the sixties and seventies. Kendall from the eighties.

1. Clough

Re: Best managers in English football
I'd certainly put Ancelotti ahead of Mancini.

Mancini joined the world's richest club, spent loads of money on players, won the league once in 4 seasons (and that only at the very last minute) and got sacked after losing to Wigan in the FA cup final.

Ancelotti had the 3rd best win ratio in the PL when at Chelsea, winning the league scoring 100+ goals with a team that had averaged less than 70 in the Mourinho era. More recently he also done a pretty decent job at Everton, considering the state of that club.

Does Ranieri get anywhere in the top 20? He was mediocre at best for most of his time in the PL but maybe deserves a place for winning the league at Leicester.

No Moyes !

The Tinkerman should surely also get a place for a truly remarkable achievement in winning the PL with that Leicester side.

Re: Best managers in English football
All very subjective and maybe depends on how old you are, think i would have Clough at number 1, Pep at 2 but SAF although a legend at 3 but just not a nice character, others are either before my time (Busby, Shankly) or my recollections are as a kid (Paisley)

Mourinho, Wenger and Bobby Robson would be 4,5 and 6, would actually have Dalgleish at 7, Mancini 8, Klopp 9 and Harry at 10.

All off the top of my head mind! and maybe missed some obvious but WTF.

What about Hughes, Grant and Pullis? Hang on, thats the the other list..........
